'Hooked' on Adrian Phillips

ADRIAN PHILLIPS' TOP TWO TRAVEL WRITING TIPS

Many writers find it difficult to get started on a piece, and the very importance of the first paragraph (which needs to deliver the necessary ‘hook’ to encourage the reader to read on) makes them labour over it. If you’re unhappy with your first paragraph, why not simply try deleting it? Frequently you’ll find that the second paragraph actually makes a better starting point.

The key to pitching to busy editors is to keep things precise and concise. Ensure that you present an angle (be precise about what your story will tackle – it’s not good enough to say ‘Do you want something on Zambia?’) and do so concisely (no more than three or four sentences). It’s fine to present more than one article suggestion, but I wouldn’t exceed three – and, again, ensure that each is no more than a few sentences in length.
